Machine Translation (MT) of channels within the Straker Translate app allows users to communicate effectively across languages within Slack. This feature is helpful for teams with multilingual members, teams that work across borders, and teams that work with international partners or clients.
There are two ways to set up this feature:
- From within the Straker Translate app for Slack
- Within a Slack channel.
Setting up MT from within the Straker Translate app for Slack
To set up MT from within the Straker Translate app for Slack, perform the following:
- Install the Straker Translate app for Slack in your desired workspace.
- From the Home tab of the Straker Translate app, select Configure Translation Settings under the Translate Channels heading.
- Under the Channels or DM field, add the Channels you want to be translated.
- Under the Language field, add the target Languages that you want the channels to be translated into.
- Under the Display Format, you can choose to have the messages display either In thread or as a separate Message.
- If you choose In thread, the Straker bot will reply to your original message in the message thread.
- If you choose Message, the Straker bot will send a new message inside the channel or DM.
- If you choose In thread, the Straker bot will reply to your original message in the message thread.
- Click Create to create and save the translation settings.
Note: To change the settings at any time, navigate to the Home tab of your Straker Translate app for Slack, find the desired channel under Current Translation Settings, and then click Edit to bring up the settings modal.
Setting up MT from within a Slack Channel
To set up MT from within a Slack channel, perform the following:
- Install the Straker Translate app for Slack in your desired workspace.
- Navigate to a channel to which you want to add the Straker Translate app for Slack.
- Under the Channels or DM field, add the Channels you want to be translated.
- Under the Language field, add the target Languages that you want the channels to be translated into.
- Under the Display Format, you can choose to have the messages display either In thread or as a separate Message.
- If you choose In thread, the Straker bot will reply to your original message in the message thread.
- If you choose Message, the Straker bot will send a new message inside the channel or DM.
- If you choose In thread, the Straker bot will reply to your original message in the message thread.
- Click Create to create and save the translation settings.
- To change the settings at any time, type /straker translate into the message box, and then press Enter to bring up the Translations Settings box.
Notes:
-
- Everyone in the channels can see the translations.
- You can add up to ten target languages to translate into.
- Once channels are added, all messages inside the channels will be translated moving forward
- The source and target languages of translated messages in the channel can be edited or deleted within an hour
Performing Direct MT in Translation Channels with No Configured Languages
To perform Direct MT in a Translation Channel with no configured languages, you must tag the @Straker Translate Bot each time you perform the MT command.
Examples:
- @Straker Translate MT <source language> to <target language> <text to translate>
- @Straker Translate MT to <target language> <text to translate>
